Learn How to Prevent Burnout In Any Situation/Job Using Solution-Focused Thinking

Denver Center for Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Throughout my 30-year career, I have watched co-workers, colleagues, and supervisors start a job energized and refreshed only to later, become crispy, cynical, and bitter. There was a subtle message that this is just how it is in the field. Everyone will eventually burn out. However, I didn't want this to happen to me. I loved my career working with some of the most challenging client populations; child welfare, court involved, domestic violence, chronic mental illness, etc. I knew I needed to find a way to prevent myself from becoming burned out. The answer was right in front of me the whole time!

In the early 90s I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know Insoo Kim Berg. Even after all the decades working in the field, she would often still excitedly talk about client successes in the evenings over dinner. She usually had a manuscript she was working on tucked in her bag as she traveled. Never did she say an unkind word about clients. Her energy was different from anyone else I had ever met. She clearly loved her work, and she showed that just setting personal boundaries and limits was not the secret to her happiness. I knew immediately, I wanted to have her passion and love of the work throughout my career. She showed me it was possible!

I think this was one of the first times that I realized that I could use Solution-Focused Thinking in my own life and have life-changing results. It wasn't just for my clients. It worked so well for me, and I want to teach you how it can work for you, too!

While working with people can be incredibly rewarding, it can also be hard work. Add the aftermath of a pandemic, social unrest, family and/or financial stress, homeschooling, and the many other stressors we and those we work with are facing, and burnout can seem inevitable. There can be a sense of failure or shame as burnout symptoms grow. We are in the helping profession. We “should” be stronger than this! Well . . . we are human too. Secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout happen to the best of us.

I had always been told that the secret to protecting professional resiliency and preventing burnout was in having clear boundaries between home and work. While I do think for some this is very important, Insoo showed me that this is not the secret to success. The more time I spent with her, the more I learned that she lived Solution-Focused Practice. She thought differently from those who suffered from burnout, and she approached challenges in a more empowering way. It was learning this different way of working and thinking about my work that made the difference. Now, 30 some years later, I am more passionate and excited about my work than ever before.

Here are just a few of the things you will walk away with:

  • An empowering and compassionate way of viewing our humanity as helpers
  • A clear sense of your unique warning signs when nearing the “Danger Zone”
  • A clear, personalized plan to help prevent and recover from work stress, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue
  • A way of working and thinking that prevents secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout despite working with some of the most challenging clients and situations

This course is designed to introduce professionals of all kinds to solution-focused thinking as it was originally developed by Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer and teach them how to use these principles to prevent and reverse professional burnout. Professionals will learn to identify signs of professional burnout and stress and develop an “emergency roadside repair kit” to assist them in preventing the potential negative impact. Professionals will learn protective factors and how to use solution-focused thinking to decrease and address potential stress in the workplace.
